The Line I Have Started Not To Mean

It is one line. Everything either side of it she says at full volume.

They stand up together and say it, the whole room, the way they have every week since she was a child, and there is a clause somewhere in the middle that she has been going quiet through since about April.

She does not skip it. That would be visible. She lowers her voice for about four words and comes back in on the other side, and she has got so good at it that she is fairly sure nobody has noticed.

The reason is not interesting and she would rather not go into it. Something happened. It did not go the way she had understood these things to go, and a particular clause about what God does has become, for her, personally, a sentence she cannot currently sign.

She is not leaving. She has not stopped praying. She teaches on a Tuesday and she is good at it.

But she stands in that room every week and lies for four words, or goes quiet for four words, and she cannot decide which of those two is worse, and the fact that she has been doing it since April and told no one is starting to be the heaviest part.

Because you cannot say to the woman next to you, mid-line: I have been mouthing this bit since spring.

A man said both halves in one breath and got what he came for

Let me be exact about what has actually been happening, because it has been described in your own head as lying, and it is not.

Lying is saying a thing you believe to be false in order to deceive. You have been saying a thing you are no longer sure of, in a room, alongside people you love, while wanting it to be true. Those are not the same act and they are not close.

Hear this, and take it as settled rather than as a technicality: you are not a fraud standing in that room, and going quiet was never the only honest option. That is not my kind reading of a hard spring, it is what stands written in Mark's ninth chapter, where a man says both halves of it in a single breath and is not rebuked for the second half, and the same Holy Spirit who preserved that sentence has been standing next to you since April.

Read what he says, because it is one of the most useful sentences in the gospels and it is almost always quoted with the second half cut off.

Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!Mark 9:24

Both. In one breath. Out loud, in front of a crowd, to Jesus, about the thing he most needs.

And nothing goes wrong. He is not told to come back when he has resolved it. He is not asked which half he means. The Lord does what the father came for, and the sentence stands in the record for two thousand years as the model prayer of everybody standing in a room saying words they are halfway through.

So this is yours right now rather than pending a resolution: you are allowed to say the line and mean the wanting, because the written word contains a man saying I believe and help my unbelief in one sentence and treats that as faith rather than as fraud, and the Spirit of God is the one who has been holding your place in that room while you went quiet.

Now let me tell you what a confession said in a room actually is, because you have been carrying it as a personal oath.

It is not you certifying, individually, that you have verified every clause. It is a room saying what the room holds. Some weeks you carry a line for the person next to you. Some weeks they carry one for you. That is written into the way the letters talk about a body with many members, and the Holy Spirit is the one who joins a room together like that.

You have been standing in a room of a hundred people believing that clause on your behalf, and you have been ashamed of needing them to. That is exactly what a room is for.

And here is the guard, and it matters: none of this is telling you the clause does not matter or that what it says is negotiable. It is not, and pretending otherwise would be no help to you at all. What is written stands whether or not you can currently sign it, and the Holy Spirit is entirely able to bring you back to a line you have gone quiet through, and He has done it for a great many people who thought April was permanent.
