The Same Words AgainPsalm 4:8

The Week It Went Mechanical

This message is for the night prayer you say alone at ten o'clock, and the week it went mechanical and you nearly stopped saying it

Ten o'clock, most nights, for two years and four months.

She does not make a thing of it. It takes about six minutes. She sits in the chair by the window with the lamp on and says the same set of words, most of them not hers, in the same order, and then she goes up.

It started in a bad autumn. Somebody gave her a small book and said try this, and she did, mostly because she was not sleeping and would have tried anything.

And it held her. That is the plain truth of it. Through that autumn and through the year after it and through a thing at work she does not talk about, ten o'clock came every night and there was a chair and six minutes of words that did not require her to think of anything.

Then two weeks ago she noticed she had reached the end without being there for any of it.

She had said the whole thing, correctly, out loud, and she could not have told you a single line of it. Her mind had been on a message she had not answered and then on whether the car needed to go in.

It happened again the next night. And the night after.

By Friday she was sitting in that chair thinking: this has become a habit in the bad sense. This is a thing my mouth does. And there is something not right about a person kneeling in front of God and thinking about a car.

She has not said it since Sunday. Four nights now, and she has been telling herself she is taking a break until it means something again, and she knows, the way you know, that this is not going to end with her starting again on her own.

The Week It Went Mechanical

An automatic thing is a thing that has been built

Let me put the honest thing down first, because the instinct that stopped you is not a bad one.

Not wanting to stand in front of God with your mouth running and your mind on the car is a decent instinct. It comes from taking Him seriously. Anybody who has never once been troubled by that has probably not been paying attention.

Now hear this, and take it as settled rather than as excuse: what happened two weeks ago is not a fault in the practice, it is a sign that the practice is built. That is not my kind framing of four missed nights, it is what stands written in the fourth Psalm, a night prayer set down for exactly this hour, and the same Holy Spirit who inspired it was in that chair at ten o'clock while you were thinking about the car.

Read what David reaches for at the end of a psalm that spends most of its length complaining.

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.Psalm 4:8

That is a night prayer. It is a short, fixed, portable thing to say at the end of a day, and it has been used as one for three thousand years, and it works precisely because it does not require you to compose it while exhausted.

So this is yours right now rather than pending a better week: the six minutes were never running on your attention, because the written word supplies fixed night words for people at the end of their strength, and the Spirit of God is the one who has been holding the room while your mind went wandering.

Now let me say the thing about the word mechanical, because it is the word that did the damage.

You used it as an accusation. Try using it as a description.

A mechanism is a thing that has been built. It runs without being pushed, which is the entire point of building one. You spent two years and four months constructing something that now runs by itself, and the first week it ran by itself you looked at it and decided it was broken.

The autumn it started, you had to drag yourself to that chair. Every night was a decision. Now it is not a decision, it is simply ten o'clock, and that is not decay, it is the finished version.

And here is what makes this urgent rather than merely interesting: the weeks when it runs without you are the weeks you are going to need it most. Nobody builds a habit for the seasons when they are full of feeling. What is written is that His compassions are new every morning even in a ruined city, and the Holy Spirit works through a fixed practice in exactly the stretch when the person keeping it has nothing to bring.

And the guard, because it is worth being clear: attention is worth wanting, and paying attention is better than not. Ask for it. Slow down. Say it aloud instead of inwardly. But do not make attention the entry fee, because on the worst night of your life you will not have it, and that is the night you will most need the chair.

The breakthrough

So go back to the chair tonight.

Not when it means something again. Tonight, at ten, in the same chair, with your mind wherever your mind is.

The words are not waiting on your attention. That is already true rather than something you have to restore, because Scripture hands people fixed night words for the end of a day and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been meeting you in that chair for two years and four months, including the nights you have no memory of.

Four nights off has already turned into telling yourself you are waiting for it to mean something, and you know where that road goes because you have watched it happen to other people.

So sit down and say it badly. Say it thinking about the car if that is what your mind is doing. Say it as a person who has built something and is not going to take it down in the first week it started working on its own.

And if you want attention, and you should, do the small practical thing: say it out loud, at half the speed, with the lamp off. That is not the entry fee. That is just what helps.

Declare this over yourself

Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as somebody waiting for a better mood. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.

  1. Charge that I am only going through the motions, you are dropped. Scripture hands out fixed night words for people at the end of their strength, and in peace I lie down was never a sentence anybody had to compose while exhausted.
  2. Fear that a thing my mouth does on its own has gone dead, get out, in the name of Jesus. A mechanism is a thing that has been built, and I spent two years and four months building this one and nearly took it down the first week it ran.
  3. Lord, You alone make me dwell in safety, and You have been in that chair at ten o'clock on every night I cannot remember. I am sitting down tonight and saying it badly, and I am not waiting until it means something.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
