He has said the same blessing over that room every Sunday for nine years and he has never once changed a word of it.
That was deliberate. He decided it early on, in his first year, when he was still trying too hard: one blessing, the same one, every week, so that the last thing anybody heard on their way out was a thing they could rely on.
It has worked. People have told him so. A man in his eighties told him once, in a car park, that he says it under his breath in the week.
And in June he stood at the front with his hands up and said it, and there was nothing behind it at all.
Not distraction. He was fully present. He heard every word leave his mouth, in order, in his own voice, over about a hundred and forty people. And inside him there was a kind of clean nothing, like a room with the furniture taken out.
He has done this before, occasionally, on a bad week. This was not a bad week. That is what has bothered him since.
Nothing had gone wrong. He was not tired, not particularly. There was no crisis. He simply stood there with his hands up and blessed a hundred and forty people and felt precisely as much as he would feel reading out a set of directions.
He went home and did not say anything to anyone.
And what he has been circling since June is the question underneath, which is: if there is nothing behind it, is anything happening? Or has he been standing up there for nine years performing a formula that runs on a feeling he no longer has?

God dictated the words and then said whose name goes on the people
Let me deal with the question head on, because it is a good question and it has been carried alone since June.
You want to know whether the blessing depends on the state of the man saying it. Whether an empty priest transmits an empty blessing.
Hear this, and take it as settled rather than as reassurance: what leaves your hands on a Sunday does not run on what is behind your ribs. That is not my kind reading of a strange June, it is what stands written in Numbers, where God supplies the exact wording and then says whose name is being put on those people, and the same Holy Spirit who dictated that formula has been in your building every week for nine years.
Read it, and then read the line that comes straight after it, which almost nobody quotes.
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.Numbers 6:24-26
And then verse twenty-seven: So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.
I will bless them. The priest puts the name on. God does the blessing.
That is the whole arrangement and it is stated in one sentence. The man at the front is not the source and was never the source, and his job is to put the name on and get out of the way, and God does not consult his emotional condition before honoring His own word.
So this is yours right now rather than pending a better Sunday: nine years of that blessing landed on a hundred and forty people at a time regardless of what was behind your ribs on any given week, because the written word puts the blessing in God's own hands and the Spirit of God is the one who carried it down that aisle in June exactly as He did in your first year.
Now let me name what the clean nothing probably was, because you have read it as an alarm.
You said it was not a bad week and you were not tired. I believe you. What you described sounds less like depletion and more like the ordinary settling that happens when a thing has become genuinely yours. Nothing written makes a feeling the measure of a work, and the Holy Spirit is not troubled by a quiet week in a man who is still standing at the front.
There is a stage, in anything a person does for long enough, where the feeling withdraws and the doing remains. A surgeon does not feel awe at the eight hundredth incision. A father does not feel a rush every time he checks a sleeping child. The feeling was scaffolding, and it comes down when the building can stand.
And here is the guard, because it matters and you would want it said: none of this makes the emptiness good, and none of it means a man should stop paying attention to his own soul. If it goes on and spreads, tell somebody. What is written is that we are to watch our life and our doctrine closely, and the Holy Spirit is not silent when a man is genuinely drying out. But one strange June, in a good week, with nothing wrong, is not that.
So stand up next Sunday and say it again.
Not with better feeling and not with an apology. Say it exactly as you have said it for nine years, hands up, over the whole room, and let the clean nothing be there if it is there.
You are putting the name on. That is already true rather than something you have to feel your way into, because Scripture says the priest puts the name on and God does the blessing, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it to the man in his eighties who says it under his breath in the week.
And do one thing for yourself, since nobody else is going to think of it: get somebody to say it over you.
Nine years of blessing a hundred and forty people and there is a fair chance nobody has stood in front of you with their hands up in all that time. What is written puts the name on the people rather than on the priest, and the Holy Spirit has a blessing for the man at the front too. Ask your wife. Ask the man in his eighties, who would be honored and would probably weep. You are allowed to be on the receiving end of the thing you have been carrying, and there is nothing weak in wanting it.
Declare this over yourself
Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as a man auditing his own insides. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.
- Emptiness behind the words, you are not what those words are made of. God gave the wording and then said He is the one who blesses, so a hundred and forty people were covered in June while I felt nothing at all.
- Fear that nine years have been a formula running on a feeling I no longer have, get out, in the name of Jesus. The feeling was scaffolding and it comes down when the building can stand, and I am still standing at the front with my hands up.
- Lord, You put Your own name on those people and You have never once consulted my condition first. I am saying it again next Sunday exactly as it is, and I am going to ask somebody to say it over me.
