Highest Mark, Unfinished Sentence

The paper came back at four in the afternoon with the highest mark in the group and a comment she has read about forty times since.

She is not a person who pretends to be modest about this. She works extremely hard and she is good at it, and the reason she is good at it is that she is exact. She does not let a word do work it has not earned. Her whole thing is precision, and it has been since she was fifteen.

And at about half past nine that same night, in the kitchen, her flatmate's brother, who is nineteen and not religious and was waiting for a lift, asked her something.

He asked why God does not just show up.

Not aggressively. Genuinely, the way somebody asks a thing they have wondered about since they were small and have never been in a room where it could be asked.

And she started well. She always starts well. She talked about the difference between evidence and coercion, and he was following, and he was nodding in the right places, and she was pleased.

And then she got to a place, about ninety seconds in, and stopped.

Not because she did not know the next move. There were three next moves and all of them were available. She stopped because she was standing at the edge of something and she could feel, in a way she has never been able to describe, that the next sentence would be a bridge over a drop rather than ground.

She said: I do not know. He said okay, and his lift came.

And she has not slept properly since, because she got the highest mark in the group at four and could not finish a sentence in her own kitchen at half past nine, and one of those two things feels like the true one.

The most careful argument in the New Testament ends at an edge

Let me be exact with you, since exactness is what you deal in.

You did not fail in that kitchen. You did something rarer than a good answer: you noticed the difference between ground and a bridge over a drop, and you refused to walk a nineteen year old out onto the second one. That is precision doing its job at the highest level, and you have been reading it as a collapse.

Hear this, and take it as settled rather than as flattery: the edge you hit is not a hole in your faith. That is not my kind framing of a hard night, it is what stands written at the end of Romans 11, where Paul finishes eleven chapters of the tightest reasoning in the New Testament and does not conclude, and the same Holy Spirit who carried that argument was in your kitchen at half past nine.

That is not a summary. He has been building for eleven chapters, on the hardest question in the letter, and where a conclusion should be there is a doxology and three unanswerable questions.

And notice that it is not a retreat. He does not withdraw one thing he argued. The reasoning stands, entire, and then it runs out into worship at exactly the point where the subject exceeds it, and Paul evidently considers that the correct ending rather than a failure to finish.

So this is yours right now rather than pending better preparation: what happened at ninety seconds was your reasoning working properly, because Scripture puts the same edge at the end of the same kind of argument and calls it depth rather than deficiency, and the Spirit of God is the one who gave you the sense to feel the ground go.

Now let me name what the nineteen year old actually received, because you have not counted it.

He got a person who is clearly very good at this saying I do not know about the exact thing he has wondered about since he was small.

He has almost certainly never heard that before. What people usually do at that edge is produce the bridge, confidently, and everybody in the room can hear the hollowness underneath it, and a nineteen year old files the whole subject under people who will not admit anything.

You did not do that. And here is the guard, because it is the place a piece like this could push you wrong: I do not know is not a strategy and it is not the goal. Three quarters of what he asked has real answers, hard-won and worth learning, and going and learning the rest of it is exactly what you should do. Precision is not the enemy of mystery, it is what tells you where the mystery actually starts. What is written is unsearchable at the edges and entirely clear in the middle, and the Holy Spirit uses both parts.
