Larger Than My Words1 Corinthians 2:9

The Four Words I Gave My Daughter

This message is for your daughter asking at bedtime what heaven is like, and the four words you gave her that you have regretted every night since

She was seven and it was already twenty minutes past when the light should have gone off.

She had done the water, and the other water, and the thing about the zip on the bag for the morning. And then, from under the covers, in the voice she uses when she is not stalling: papi, what is heaven like?

His mother died in February. That is the context, and the child has been circling it for six weeks in the way children do, sideways, at bedtimes.

And he was tired. Genuinely tired, not impatient, the sort of tired where your face aches.

And he said: it is beautiful, mija. Really beautiful.

Four words. She said okay. She turned over. He put the light off and stood in the hallway with his hand still on the switch.

Because he does not think heaven is beautiful the way a hotel is beautiful, and that is what he had just handed a seven year old whose abuela is gone. He knows that his own grandmother believed she would see her sister again and that she said so in the kitchen with total certainty and no evidence, and that it was the strongest thing in that house. He knows what he has read and what he has hoped and what he cannot say.

And he gave her four words off the top of his head at half past eight.

He has thought about it every night since. Not because he lied. Because he had one shot at that question in the dark, from a child who had worked up to asking it, and he answered it like a man closing a door.

The Four Words I Gave My Daughter

Scripture itself refuses to describe it

Let me say something about the tiredness before we go on, because it has never once been allowed as a reason.

You had buried your mother six weeks earlier. You were standing at the end of a day, at half past eight, being asked the largest question there is by somebody you love more than your own life. Four words is not neglect. Four words is a man still upright.

Now hear this, and take it as settled rather than as excuse: you did not fail her, and you have not spent your one shot. That is not my kind reading of a hard bedtime, it is what stands written to the Corinthians, where Paul reaches for that question and deliberately declines to answer it, and the same Holy Spirit who carried that refusal was in the hallway with your hand on the light switch.

Read how he handles the subject, because it is the most striking non-answer in the letters.

What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived, the things God has prepared for those who love Him.1 Corinthians 2:9

That is three whole categories of human capacity, named and ruled out. Not seen, not heard, not imagined.

He is not being coy and he is not withholding. He is telling the truth about the size of it, and then, in the very next line, he says that God has revealed it by His Spirit, which is the only way anybody gets anything of it at all.

So here is what is yours right now rather than pending a better bedtime: you were never in possession of the answer she asked for. Nobody has been. Scripture says no eye has seen and no mind has conceived it, and the Spirit of God is the one who reveals whatever any of us actually holds.

Now let me say what a child that age is really asking, because it changes what a good answer looks like.

She was not requesting a description. She has seen enough television to build her own palace if she wanted one. What she was asking, sideways, from under the covers, six weeks after February, is: is my abuela all right, and are you all right, and is it safe to think about this in the dark.

And she got: it is beautiful, mija. Which answered all three, badly but not falsely, from a tired man she trusts.

Here is the guard, though, because this is where a piece like this could push you the wrong way.

Not knowing is not the same as having nothing to say, and mystery is never a reason to hand a child fog. There are things we do know, plainly and on good authority: that the dead in Christ are with Him, that He is not far from any of us, that death is not the end of the story. Those are not guesses and they belong to her too.

The line is this. Say confidently what has been said, and say honestly that the rest is bigger than anybody's description, and never fill the second part with invention to keep the first part from feeling thin. What is written is enough to stand a child on, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the difference between a fact recited and a thing a child can rest on.

The breakthrough

So go back in.

Not with a lecture and not with a better paragraph. Sit on the end of the bed tomorrow and say: I have been thinking about your question. And then say the two things.

Say the thing you know: that your abuela is with the Lord and that He has her, and that this is not a hope you invented. And then say the honest thing: that nobody has ever been able to describe what it is like, that the Bible says nobody has seen it or imagined it, and that even Paul would not try.

You have that to give her. It is already yours rather than something to work up, because the written word puts the mystery there itself and refuses to fill it in, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a plain honest sentence from a father and settles a child with it.

And then ask her what she thinks. Seven year olds have a great deal to say about this and are rarely consulted, and you will find out in ninety seconds what she was actually asking.

Declare this over yourself

Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as a father marking his own bedtimes. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.

  1. Regret at the side of that bed, you are not raising my daughter. Scripture says no eye has seen it and no mind has conceived it, so I was never holding the answer she asked for and neither is anybody else.
  2. Fear that I spent my one shot at half past eight, get out, in the name of Jesus. She was asking whether her abuela is all right and whether I am all right, and both of those can be answered tomorrow and every day after it.
  3. Jesus, You have my mother and You have my daughter, and You did not leave me with nothing to hand her. I am going back in to say the true thing and then the honest thing, and then I am going to ask her what she thinks.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
