The verse got him in a hotel room in a city he did not want to be in, at half past eleven at night, reading because he could not sleep.
Jacob works seven years for Rachel. And then the line: they seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her.
He read it four times.
Because he is in year seven. Not of a courtship. Of a situation: an arrangement of duty and geography and one particular person's needs, entered into freely, in a decision he still thinks was the right one, and he has been in it since he was thirty-one.
And it has not seemed like a few days. It has seemed like seven years. It has seemed, on some weeks, like considerably more than seven years, and he could tell you what he has missed and he has a fairly exact figure for what it has cost him.
He is not looking for a way out. That is what makes it hard to talk about. There is nothing to fix and nobody to blame, and if you offered him a door tonight he would not take it.
But he sat on the edge of a hotel bed at half past eleven with that verse in front of him and felt something he had no name for, and by the time he worked out what it was, it was two in the morning.
It was this. If real love makes seven years feel like days, then what does it say about him that his seven have felt like every single hour of themselves?
He turned the light off and lay there with the answer he had already given himself, which was that his love must be a much smaller thing than he had hoped.

The verse is a description, and you turned it into a standard
Let me be exact about what the text does and does not say, because precision is going to be the mercy here.
So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.Genesis 29:20
That is a narrator's observation about one man in one situation. It is not an instruction. There is no command in it, no rate anybody is held to, and nowhere in Scripture is that verse used to measure anybody's love.
And hear this, and take it as settled rather than as relief: your seven years are not a report on the size of your love. You have not been failing a test that verse was setting. That is not my kind reading of a bad night in a hotel, it is what stands written in the same book by the same narrator, who a chapter later has Jacob complaining bitterly about how long and how hard the whole thing has been, and the Holy Spirit who preserved both lines did not consider them a contradiction.
Go and read what Jacob himself says at the end of it.
This was my situation: the heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes. It was like this for the twenty years I was in your household.Genesis 31:40-41
Same man. Same years. He tells us they flew, and then he tells us they ground him down, and both are in the account and neither cancels the other.
So the felt length of a thing is not the measure of the love inside it. This is yours right now rather than pending a better attitude: you can have loved somebody through every hour of seven years and have felt every one of those hours, because the written word puts both testimonies in one man's mouth and the Spirit of God did not edit out the hard one.
Now let me name what the verse is actually doing, because there is a real gift in it and you talked yourself out of it at two in the morning.
Love does not shorten time. It gives time a direction. Jacob's seven years went somewhere, and a stretch that is going somewhere sits differently in a person than a stretch that is only being endured, even when the hours are identical.
That is a description of a mercy, not a threshold to clear. And your seven have been going somewhere, whatever they have felt like, because you have known since year one exactly who you were doing it for.
And the deepest thing here, which you did not put together in the dark: the verse is about a man serving out of love, and every commentator in history has looked at that story and seen a picture of a longer service still, because Scripture says He endured for the joy set before Him, and the Holy Spirit has been holding you in a seven year arrangement that He Himself understands from the inside.
So let the seven years be long.
They were long. You are not required to feel otherwise, and the verse in the hotel room was never asking you to. Reading it as a standard turned a sentence about one man's joy into a stick, and you have been carrying that stick since half past eleven. Nothing written in that chapter hands anybody a stick, and the Holy Spirit has never once weighed a person's love by how the hours felt.
Put it down. What is already true of you, and not waiting on you to feel warmer about it: this has been love the whole way through, because love is measured by what a person keeps doing and not by how the hours sat, and the Holy Spirit has been the one sustaining a man who stayed when a door was standing open.
And when you get back from that city, look at the thing you have actually built. Not the cost, which you can quote to the nearest figure. The other column, which you have never once totted up: what has been held together for seven years because you were in the room. That number exists too, and the written word says your labor is not in vain, and the Holy Spirit has been keeping that column while you kept the other one.
Then go on. Not with a better attitude. Just on, which is what you were going to do anyway, and which is the whole of what has ever been asked of you.
Declare this over yourself
Then say these out loud. Know what they stand on: this authority is not yours by nature, it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you speak as one representing the King and not as a man grading his own affection. Every line rests on what is already written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your own voice. You speak under His will, never over it, and however He answers, the outcome is His.
- Accusation that a better person would not have felt the length, you are dismissed. The same man who said seven years seemed like days also said the heat consumed him and sleep fled from his eyes, and Scripture kept both.
- Fear that my love must be a much smaller thing than I hoped, get out, in the name of Jesus. Love is measured by what a person keeps doing, and I have not once stopped doing it in seven years.
- Lord, You endured for the joy set before You and You know a long service from the inside. I stayed while a door was standing open, and I am going to go and total up the other column.
