Long Enough To ChangePhilippians 1:6

Do Not Dig It Up to Measure It

This message is for A reader reviewing the same character flaw every December needs patience for transformation measured by faithful remaining rather than a self-imposed holiday deadline.

The child pulls the bulb out of the pot because nothing has happened.

Three days ago, small hands pressed it into the soil. This morning there is still only brown earth. So one finger digs around the edge, another hooks beneath the bulb, and up it comes with pale roots barely beginning.

"I wanted to see if it was growing."

The adult does not scold. They make a new hollow, return the bulb, and gently move soil around it.

"It cannot grow if we keep digging it up to measure it."

No schedule follows. No promise about which morning the green shoot appears. Just water, a windowsill, and the kindness of leaving the soil in place.

Every December, you have been doing something similar to your own soul.

Do Not Dig It Up to Measure It

The One who began it

Paul writes with confidence "that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus" (Philippians 1:6).

The confidence rests on the One doing the work.

You are being carried within a work God began. Scripture puts completion in His faithful hands, and the Holy Spirit makes that promise living without giving you a deadline to impose.

This does not mean choices are irrelevant. It means your December review is not the foreman of transformation. God has not handed the work over to your impatience.

You have already remained through more than you notice. Scripture names the continuing work, and the Holy Spirit guards hidden roots from your harshest measurement.

The annual excavation

Perhaps the flaw has the same name every year. Anger. Avoidance. Envy. The sentence spoken too sharply. The retreat into silence. December arrives, and you compare this year's failure with last year's promise.

Honest reflection can help. Endless excavation cannot.

You are allowed to name one small difference without demanding a finished person. Scripture promises completion in God's keeping, and the Holy Spirit shows growth without turning comparison into condemnation.

Maybe you apologize sooner now. Maybe the silence lasts an hour instead of three days. Maybe you recognize envy before it becomes cruelty. None of these is the flower. They may be roots.

Slow is not the same as stalled.

A deadline God did not set

Christmas can become a line drawn across the soil. Different by then. Patient by then. Free of this by then.

The date may help a calendar. It cannot command transformation.

You are not failing a deadline God never gave you. Scripture points to the day of Christ rather than your holiday review, and the Holy Spirit keeps patience from becoming permission to give up.

Patience is not passivity. Water the soil. Keep the small practice. Make the apology. Ask for help when help is needed. Then resist the urge to pull everything up and demand evidence.

Faithful remaining is active work.

What not reviewing protects

There is a kind of attention that helps growth and a kind that makes growth perform for you. A week without review lets the practice be simply lived.

You are free to continue without grading the week. Scripture says God continues His work, and the Holy Spirit does not need a scorecard to remain present.

This does not forbid wise accountability or careful reflection. It gives inspection a limit. Roots need darkness. Not everything true becomes more true because it is constantly exposed.

Name what has changed

Do this gently. Look back ten years, not ten days. Name one thing that is different, however small.

Perhaps you once defended every mistake and now sometimes say, "I was wrong." Perhaps another person's success used to spoil the whole evening, and now the sting passes before supper. Perhaps prayer once disappeared for months after disappointment, and now you return with one honest sentence.

You have evidence of movement without needing evidence of arrival. Scripture says God continues the work, and the Holy Spirit helps you recognize a root without demanding a flower.

Do not inflate the change. Do not dismiss it either. Accurate gratitude is neither pride nor denial. It is simply refusing to call ten years of quiet mercy nothing.

The flaw that remains may still need confession, repair, counsel, or practical boundaries. Patience never means permitting harm. Slow transformation is not a shelter for refusing responsibility.

Yet responsibility works better without contempt. Shame digs roughly and tears whatever it touches. Grace tells the truth, repairs what can be repaired, and returns the soil with careful hands.

You are not required to hate yourself into holiness. Scripture grounds completion in God's faithfulness, and the Holy Spirit forms Christ's likeness without borrowing cruelty as a tool.

Name the small difference. Thank God. Then let it go back underground where gratitude, practice, community, and time can keep feeding it.

Standing before speaking

You are in Christ, and Christ is in you. Scripture gives you standing within God's continuing work, and the Holy Spirit makes His patience yours to receive today.

You may address the deadline and tell it its limit. You are not commanding the pace of growth. You are agreeing with the God who has not abandoned what He began.

The breakthrough

Put the bulb back.

Return the soil gently. Water what you can. Leave tomorrow unopened.

God is completing what He began in you. Scripture gives the work to His faithfulness, and the Holy Spirit keeps you present without a holiday deadline.

You would rather be changed slowly than keep uprooting what is alive. The roots do not owe you a performance. You are being changed at a depth you cannot inspect, and you have been every year you wrote the same three lines, because the word says the seed grows though the man does not know how and the Holy Spirit is the one growing it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud. You are in Christ, and His authority is yours to agree with Scripture as the Holy Spirit makes it living. God may answer in His own way and timing, and slow change is never evidence of failed faith.

  1. December deadline, release the work you were never given. Scripture says God completes what He begins, and the Holy Spirit keeps me inside His patience today.
  2. Fear that slow means stalled, leave in the name of Jesus. Hidden roots are still roots, and I refuse to uproot living growth for a measurement.
  3. God, You began this work and remain faithful within it. I water what is mine to water, keep the soil in place, and leave completion in Your hands.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
