The Twelve-Week Course

He signed up on Monday and he felt genuinely good about it for most of Tuesday.

Twelve weeks. A proper one, with a workbook and a cohort and a live call on Wednesday evenings, run by somebody he respects. It is not cheap and that is part of why it feels serious.

He has done four of these in the last three years. He finished two of them.

And there is a thing he has known he needs to do since about March.

He is not going to be evasive about it here even in his own head: he needs to go and see his son and say a particular sentence, and his son is twenty-six and lives forty minutes away and has been perfectly polite for about two years in a way that is worse than the alternative.

He knows the sentence. He has known it since March. It is nine words long and it is not complicated and it starts with the word I.

He signed up for the course on Monday night and lay awake afterwards feeling like a man who was finally addressing things.

And at about two in the morning, in the way things arrive at two in the morning, he heard himself think: twelve weeks is until November.

The blessing sits on the far side of doing, not knowing

Let me be straight, and then let me be fair, in that order.

Straight: signing up is not a step toward the sentence. It looks like one. It produces the feeling of one. It is not one, and at two in the morning you did the arithmetic and found out what it actually is, which is until November.

Fair: the course is a good course, the man running it knows what he is doing, and you are not going to be told here that learning is the enemy or that a person with an unresolved thing has no business improving. That is not true and it would make you worse rather than better.

Now hear this, and take it as settled rather than as a push: you have not been waiting to know what to do since March, and the twelve weeks will not give it to you. That is not my hard reading of a Monday night, it is what stands written in John's thirteenth chapter, where the Lord finishes an act of service and puts the blessing somewhere very specific, and the same Holy Spirit who preserved that sentence was in the room with you at two in the morning.

Read it, because it is one line and it is aimed precisely at people who sign up for things.

Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.John 13:17

Now that you know these things. He grants the knowing, straight away, without argument.

And then He moves the whole weight of the sentence onto the second half. The blessing is not attached to the knowing, which they now have, and it is not withheld until further study. It sits on the far side of one verb, and the gap between those two halves is where an enormous number of well-taught people spend their lives.

So this is yours right now rather than pending a workbook: you have the nine words, and you have had them since March, because the written word grants the knowing and puts the blessing past the doing, and the Spirit of God is the one who kept you awake on Monday doing arithmetic.

Now let me name what a course actually is, in this situation, because you will handle it better if you can see it.

It is a legitimate thing put in an illegitimate slot. Twelve weeks of good material is a good thing to have. Twelve weeks standing between a father and a forty-minute drive is a barricade made of something respectable, which is the strongest kind there is, because nobody, including you, can call it what it is.

And the cost is running the whole time. Your son has been polite for two years and politeness of that kind hardens. What is written says today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your heart, and the Holy Spirit has said today about this since March, and every enrollment has answered Him with a date.
